Everyone, no matter how old, benefits from physical activity and it is never to late to start. But what exactly is physical activity? And what gain do regularly active people have? And how can you become active? The next pages will provide answers to these and other questions.

Retirement

After work life, fulfilled family duties and other accomplished tasks: For many people a new phase of life beginns at age 65. A period of rest and retrospectivity. A tranquil phase which is especially important for the mind.
But amongst all this change:

Please do not retire your body. Physical activity is an important protective factor for many chronic diseases, especially in persons over the age of 65.

Physical Activity Levels

Light Activities

Your heart beats slightly faster than normal. You can talk and sing.

  • walking leisurely
  • vacuuming (light household chores)
  • streching

Moderate Activities

Your heart beats faster than normal. You can talk but not sing.

  • swimming
  • gymnastics/aerobics
  • fast walking
  • strength training

Vigorous Activities

Your heart rate increases a lot. You can’t talk or your talking is broken up by large breaths.

  • jogging or running
  • tennis
  • stair machine
  • squash
  • badminton

Tip: With increasing age this rule of thumb is still applicable: A little exercise is better than none at all!
